It was about a year after graduating from high school that I decided to tell my mother that I was gay. Although I’d told many friends by that time, I still found it awkward to talk about it to my parents. After talking it out with my sister (who I’d told months prior), I had a plan. She helped me through it by being on speakerphone while I talked it out with my mother, just in case I needed her support. I must say that it was quite the relief finally getting the news out in the open. My mother, although saddened that she may not have another grandchild, supported me as I had initially hoped. With her support, I was able to develop confidence to be more honest about who I am.
